Life at the Highlands School Southern Campus

Life at the Highlands School Southern Campus – 2015 – Semester 1, 2016

Wow! What a fantastic year 2015 was for the staff and students in the Southern Campus and 2016 is promising to be even more exciting. We now have a third class which will bring with it two new, highly experienced staff members. Jenna is trained in Outdoor Education – a program that promotes team building and social interaction. Rene comes from a horticultural background and also enjoys outdoor activities. Both will bring new skills, ideas, enthusiasm and talents to our team. By following our ethos of respect, responsibility and fairness a calm, happy and productive learning environment will continue to pervade the campus. When we see the student's arrive with smiles on their faces we know they feel a sense of belonging, pride and inclusion.

Many projects and events were included into our program including, dry wall construction, kitchen assembly, development of cricket skills, swimming program, an overnight camp, establishment of an orchard, a Read and Ride initiative and an association with the Welby Garden Centre for future work experience.  Another fishing camp will be deployed in Term 1 for some of the students. The knowledge, skills and fun that the students glean from these activities will take them from the classroom into successful futures.

The students' have established a great academic routine beginning with an hour of Maths every morning. It was at this time we find the students' to be most receptive to new concepts and at their best in terms of concentration. PE followed and a huge improvement in their sportsmanship has ensued. Literacy still remains a challenging subject and one they are still reluctant to engage in at all times hence the establishment of the Read and Ride volunteer program which will encourage literacy and be reinforced by the reward of physical activity. This innovative program will be expanded in 2016 and we thank our volunteers in anticipation of their future work. These include Peter Malone, an ex- Highland Principal and David Chandler a retired teacher.

Our students have not been engaged in traditional academic subjects throughout their schooling so we encourage interest -based learning. This means students are encouraged to pursue their own interests and learn to utilise their time productively. Our garden has been planted with hundreds of daffodils and a variety of fruit trees and produce harvested will be incorporated into our healthy eating/cooking program (pear, apple, quince and dwarf plum – these trees will be espaliered along our Western fence to soften our mesh fence) our sandstone fire pit will be completed by Winter and our new Bunning's kitchen is a work in process with completion early 2016.
