What we do do at Highlands School?

We try to help students with behaviour challenges

How?

We try to find out what the student needs so they can learn:

When a student has trouble with behaviour that affects learning, a team of teachers, specialists, and sometimes psychologists look closely to understand their needs.

1.    Making a Special Behaviour Plan (Identification and Assessment):

A plan is made just for that student. It sets clear goals and explains what causes the behaviour and how to help before and after it happens.

2.    Giving Extra Help (Individualised Behaviour Support Plan):

The student gets special support either in the classroom or in a quiet place. They learn things like how to get along with others, control their feelings, and handle difficult situations.

3.    Working Together (Collaboration):

Teachers, support staff, families, and the student keep talking to make sure everyone helps in the same way. Sometimes the specialised staff get additional training to use the right strategies.

4.    Checking Progress (Monitoring and Review):

The Learning Support Team and the Teachers watch how the student is doing and change the plan if needed.

Some Ways We Support Students:

a.    Encouraging Good Behaviour: (Positive Behaviour for learning (PBL), Restorative Practices):

We focus on praising positive things students do. Every day is a new day. All behaviours are restorative.

b.    Understanding Why Behaviour Happens (Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA):

We try to figure out what causes the behaviour, in order to help improve it so the student can learn.

c.    Clear Routines and Rules: (Explicit Teaching):

We use pictures or simple schedules and set clear expectations, so students know what to do.

d.    Teaching Social Skills: (Social Emotional Learning (SELs):

Students learn how to share, take turns, and solve problems calmly.

e.    Helping Students Calm Down (Behaviour Response Plan):

We give students breaks or quiet places to relax when they feel upset.

f.     Using Rewards (Incentives):

Students earn catch cards, stickers, signatures and excursions for good behaviour.

g.    Calmly Handling Upset Students (De-escalation):

Staff are trained to stay calm and help students when they get upset to stop things from getting worse.
